What information do i need to file for adoption?

There are documents and information that you will have to provide to the court if you would like to proceed with an adoption.  These include:

a. A child abuse registry check for all adults in the home (application form)

b. A criminal record check for all adults in the home (application)

c. Information about your employment and housing

d. Contact information for the biological parent(s)

 

can an adult be adopted?

Yes.  In some cases the adoptee will already be an adult at the time of adoption.  Generally an adult can be adopted if:

a. The adoptee consents to being adopted

b. There is a reasonable age difference between the adoptee and adopter

c.  There is a good reason for the adoption

The biological parent has nothing to do with the child - do they really need to be served?

Generally, the answer is yes.  Even in a case where the biological parent has had nothing to do with the child in many years, or where one of the parents has an order of sole custody, the biological parent will have to be served.  If they truly cannot be located, the court may agree that they not be served, but you must show that good efforts have been made to locate the parent.
